Are record companies becoming extinct?

Posted by Comments off

With the rise of digital distribution, do artists still need to accept the measly 20% or less cut that record companies normally dole out? The answer is quickly becoming, “No.” As digital sales surpass CD sales, artists no longer need the distribution channels for their music that record companies normally control, nor the marketing money for displays and advertising. Instead, an artist can simply release a song on Youtube or related social media sites, and then sell directly from an Amazon or iTunes listing. This has many record companies becoming very scared and doing everything they can to protect their business, however their reason for existing is quickly becoming hard to find.
